Teacher, scholar, and free speech advocate Franklyn S. Haiman was born on June 23, 1921 and raised in what he later termed the “socially segregated” Jewish community of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Haiman received his MA and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University, both in Speech. He joined NU's faculty in 1948, where he remained beyond his 1991 retirement, continuing to lecture and participate in panels at the University for years to come.
